INVITATION

The New Zealand Acoustical Society has pleasure in inviting you to this International Symposium on Sustainability in Acoustics (ISSA 2010) - a conference on sustainability for researchers, practitioners, legislators and local body officers in the areas of acoustics and noise control. This Symposium is conjoint with the biennial conference of the New Zealand Acoustical Society and in tandem with the 20th International Congress on Acoustics (ICA 2010) being held in Sydney.

Sustainability is not just a catch phrase; it has become an underpinning principle of living. Not only does sustainability relate to recycling of materials and reduction of emissions but we must ensure that we sustain a nourishing and supportive existence for the occupants of our planet. Thus the compass for the symposium is very broad spanning not only the conventional concerns of sustainability but also matters ranging from quiet environments, new applications involving acoustics through to hearing preservation as well as embracing all areas of sustainability. Presentations will cover, amongst others, green star rating of buildings, innovative use of materials and building techniques to reduce emissions, and the protection and preservation of noise free environments.

ISSA 2010 sees an exciting range of highly esteemed international speakers, including: Dr Felipe Gaitan, a pioneering researcher and discoverer of single bubble sonoluminescence, now currently working on using acoustics to facilitate nuclear fusion; and Dr Trevor Nightingale, Group Leader in Acoustics at the National Research Council Canada and an expert in testing and researching the acoustics of lightweight structures. Furthermore, Professor Peter Thorne, a specialist on the physiology and pathology of hearing and who was this year made a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to Auditory Neuroscience will also present.

We warmly encourage you to participate in the Symposium and look forward to welcoming you to Auckland in August.
